United Family Counseling Services was awarded a grant from the Posey County Community Foundation to provide mental health services at low or no cost to residents of Posey County. For more information please contact Rev. Karen Lipinczyk, Interim Director, at 424-5680. She is able to schedule sessions at St. Peter's UCC on Highway 66 in Parker Settlement or Trinity UCC on Mulberry St. in Mt. Vernon. Below is a short history.
The United Family Counseling Services (UFCS) was started in 1994 by the Evansville Tri-State Association of the United Church of Christ as a response to the need for accessible, low-cost mental health care beyond the pastoral counseling offered the local churches. The founders had determined that affordable, accessible, profession AND faith-based counseling that was non-denominational and non-judgmental was a serious need for both church and non-churched residents of our area. Counseling services are available on a sliding scale and oftentimes services are provided free of charge. In 2008 the director/counselor saw 75 clients for a total of 396 sessions and 80% of these paid less than $20 per session, including many sessions offered at no charge based on the severe economic distress of the clients. No one is turned away unless there is potential danger to self or another, at which time a referral is made to either psychiatric services or an in-patient treatment facility.
